Can Yeast Infections Be Cured?

Yeast infections are one of the most uncomfortable infections that a woman will experience in her lifetime. These infections are caused by an overgrowth of an organism or yeast known as Candida. This organism generally lives in the vagina in small numbers, but when the bacteria in the vagina becomes out of balance the organism can grow to large numbers causing an infection.

This raises a common question: are yeast infections easily treatable??

Surprisingly, vaginal yeast infections are very common and occur in approximately 75% of the female population. They tend to occur more commonly in women who are under stress, lacking a nutritional diet, are taking antibiotics or who are ill. Infections can also happen as a result of hormonal imbalance during pregnancy. Women with a weak immune system are also at an increased risk of developing symptoms.

There are numerous yeast infection symptoms that occur with this imbalance, and they may differ between each case. Some symptoms that will most likely appear are an itching and burning sensation around the vaginal opening, a thick, white discharge resembling the consistency of cottage cheese, a burning sensation while urinating and pain or discomfort during sexual intercourse.

Although the pain and discomfort of yeast infections may be unbearable, a cure for yeast infection has long been found. If this is the first yeast infection that has been experienced, a visit to the doctor is always advised, and many times this infection can be safely and easily treated with over the counter medication. These medications come in the form of pills, creams, vaginal suppositories or a combination of all of these. While all medications will treat the infection, a topical cream will offer rapid relief of uncomfortable symptoms.

Since a yeast infection is an experience that a woman will never want to experience again, there are several steps that can be taken to prevent them. It is important to avoid tight fitting clothing and if possible only wear white, cotton undergarments. Change your clothing immediately following water or sweat inducing activities and avoid heavily scented perfumes in sensitive areas. Be sure to wash well and dry the body completely after bathing.

While yeast infections can be annoying and uncomfortable, they are easily preventable and treatable. There are several over the counter and prescription medications to treat the infection quickly and effectively. If more than one yeast infection is experienced in a year, visit your doctor to ensure that a more seriously health problem is not the cause.
